What people keep in a container

Most people don’t store “everything”. They store one specific thing that’s in the way at home. Here’s what usually ends up on the list.

  • Seasonal things

Winter coats in summer, the garden furniture and paddling pool in winter, the Christmas tree and decorations eleven months a year. Things you use for a few weeks that take up a wardrobe all year.

    Usually a small container

  • Skis, bikes and kit

Skis and boots, a snowboard, bicycles, the tent and sleeping bags, a kayak or paddleboard. No more carrying them up in the lift or keeping them under a tarp on the balcony.

    Small container

  • Tyres

A set of winter tyres and a set of summer ones. Twice a year you drop by, swap them and drive to the tyre shop. You park by the container, so they never travel further than your boot.

Small container, with room to spare

  • Kids’ things

The pram, the cot, the car seat, the high chair and the clothes you’re keeping for a younger child or a cousin. Expensive to buy again, and only gathering dust at home.

    Small container

  • When the flat gets small

The armchair you love but have no room for, books, records, tools, the boxes from a cellar you no longer have. A container gives you the room back, and your things stay yours and reachable 24/7.

For a whole flat, see furniture storage for moving.

    Small or medium container

  • Inherited things

A grandparent’s or parent’s flat is being cleared and the family hasn’t decided what to keep, sell or give away. A container buys time: furniture, paintings, china and photo albums wait in one place until everyone agrees.

    Medium container

A motorbike or scooter over winter? We have a separate page on vehicle storage.

Your flat won’t grow. Your storage can.

Your parents’ cellar is handy until you need something on a Sunday evening. A container is yours: you can put on your own padlock and hold the only key, and you come whenever you like, day or night. You park next to the door, so there are no stairs, no lift and no carrying things across a yard.

The lot is in Radiofar, by the Belgrade–Zagreb motorway. It’s about 15 minutes from New Belgrade and about 12 from Zemun, with no city traffic and no hunting for parking.

You pay the monthly rent and nothing on top. If you don’t need a whole container, share it with someone and pay half.

How to pack for a steel container

A container is dry and closed, but it isn’t climate controlled. When the weather swings from cold to warm, condensation can form on the cold steel. These six rules keep your things dry and in one piece.

Cross-section of a medium container, roughly to scale. The numbers match the rules.
  1. Nothing sits straight on the floor

Lay down pallets or wooden battens first, then your things. If a little moisture gathers, it stays underneath, not in your boxes or upholstery. Builders’ merchants usually have pallets to spare.

  2. Leave a gap from the walls

About ten centimetres between your things and the steel is enough for air to move. Don’t push a mattress or sofa flat against the wall.

  3. Heavy at the bottom, light on top

Books and tools go in smaller boxes at the bottom; bedding and clothes in bigger ones on top. Boxes of the same size stack into steady columns. Keep each box light enough to lift without a struggle.

  4. Wrap upholstery so it breathes

Cover armchairs, mattresses and sofas with an old sheet, a blanket or a cloth cover. Plastic wrap is for the journey only: left on for months, it traps moisture against the fabric.

  5. What you need goes by the door

The bike, tyres and skis go at the front; boxes of inherited things and outgrown kids’ clothes at the back. Leave a narrow aisle so you can reach everything without unloading.

  6. Only dry things go in

Wash the tent, bike and tyres and let them dry properly first. Defrost the fridge, wipe it out and leave the door ajar. Something wet in a closed container is the one real enemy.

Label every box

Write the room, the contents and a number on two sides of each box. Keep the list of numbers on your phone, and in half a minute you know the ski boots are in box seven.

Not allowed in the container: flammable liquids and gas bottles, chemicals, food and anything perishable, animals, and anything illegal. Cash, jewellery and important papers are better kept at home.

What size for household things?

For seasonal things, kit and tyres, the small 3 m container is usually enough. Take the medium one when furniture comes along with the boxes. All three are drawn to the same scale.

Questions about storing your things

Can I keep my winter and summer tyres there?

Yes. A set of tyres fits even in the small container, and you park right by the door, so they never travel further than your boot.

Do bikes and skis fit in the small container?

Yes. Inside it’s 2.8 m long, 2.35 m wide and 2.39 m high: room for a few bikes, skis and boxes stacked along a wall.

Can we store a relative’s things while the family decides what to keep?

Yes. The term goes into the contract, which is in one person’s name, and you can split the rent between you.

Can I rent part of a container?

No, you always rent a whole container. If even the small one is too much, share it with a friend.
